US Removes UN Rapporteur Francesca Albanese from Sanctions List
(MENAFN) The United States has removed UN Special Rapporteur on Palestinian human rights Francesca Albanese from its Specially Designated Nationals sanctions list, according to the US Treasury Department website, as stated by reports.
The decision follows a recent ruling by a federal judge who blocked the sanctions imposed by the Trump administration, finding that they infringed on First Amendment protections by targeting her speech.
Judge Richard Leon issued a preliminary injunction, concluding that the sanctions appeared to be aimed at restricting Albanese’s expression based on the content and viewpoint of her statements.
Albanese, an Italian national based in Tunisia, had been sanctioned after publicly urging the International Criminal Court in The Hague to pursue war crimes cases involving Israeli officials over actions in Gaza.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had previously accused her of conducting what he described as a “campaign of political and economic warfare” against the United States and Israel, following a report she authored that named several multinational corporations alleged to be connected to activities in occupied Palestinian territories.
Albanese has served as the UN Human Rights Council’s special rapporteur for the West Bank and Gaza since 2022, focusing on documenting human rights conditions in the region.
The sanctions had restricted her from entering the United States, accessing US financial systems, and conducting business with US-linked entities.
A related legal challenge was also filed by her family members, including her husband, a World Bank economist, and her US citizen daughter, according to reports.
